Tarkwa, February 20, 2025 – Medeama Sporting Club reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of fans, players, and officials by hosting a pivotal workshop on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the Tarkwa na Aboso Stadium. Led by the club’s Administrative Manager, McDavid Asare, the session brought together key stakeholders, including top representatives from the various service units from Tarkwa Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), the club’s stewards, and leadership from the supporters’ groups, to discuss and implement the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) newly enhanced matchday security guidelines.

The workshop comes after a tragic incident in the Ghana Premier League that sent shockwaves to the football community on February 2, 2025, where a football supporter was fatally stabbed amid chaotic scenes. The incident, which has led to multiple arrests and a temporary suspension of league activities, underscored the urgent need to eradicate hooliganism and violence from Ghanaian football.

McDavid Asare, in opening the workshop, emphasized Medeama SC’s dedication to fostering a safe and enjoyable environment at all matches. “The death of a stakeholder is a stark reminder that football must remain a celebration of talent and passion, not a battlefield. As a club, we are fully committed to implementing the Ghana Football Association’s enhanced security protocols to ensure that such tragedies never occur again—whether at our home ground or beyond,” he stated.

The workshop featured productive discussions with prominent security figures from Tarkwa Municipality, including ASP Peter Abuuro from the Police, ADO1 Benjamin Abban from the Fire Service, and BEMT Michael Gaisie from the Ghana Ambulance Service, alongside Medeama’s stewards and representatives from the supporters’ leadership, such as Chairman Ampong Augustine, among others and Mr John Cudjoe, who is the Club’s Welfare Officer. Together, they reviewed the GFA’s updated matchday security and protocol guidelines, which aim to standardize safety measures across all Premier League venues. Key topics included crowd management, incident response strategies, and collaboration between clubs, security agencies, and supporters to preempt and address potential risks.

Medeama SC’s proactive approach aligns with a broader movement within Ghanaian football to stamp out hooliganism. The GFA, in response to the Nsoatre incident, has engaged clubs and supporter groups nationwide, introducing initiatives such as increased police presence, stricter venue regulations, and educational campaigns to promote sportsmanship. Medeama’s workshop reflects the club’s determination to lead by example in this critical effort.

“Our supporters are the heartbeat of this club, and their safety is our top priority,” said the Administrative Manager. “By working hand-in-hand with security chiefs and our stewards, and empowering our supporters to uphold the values of fair play, we aim to set a standard for others can follow.”

The representatives from the security services present welcomed the spirit behind the workshop and their commitment to working assiduously to ensure the implementation of the guidelines to the fullest without compromise. The workshop concluded with a renewed resolve to enforce the GFA’s safety protocols to the fullest, ensuring that Tarkwa na Aboso Stadium and other match venues within the municipality remain fortress of footballing excellence and safety.
